In a move that shouldn’t come as too large of a shock, Scott Hood of GamecockCentral.com is reporting that wide receiver Lamar Scruggs and running back Eric Baker are transferring to Appalachian State.
Scruggs, a redshirt junior, has shown little promise during his career with the Gamecocks. He was set to compete for playing time against a flurry of new talent coming in at the wide receiver position. Coming out of Jacksonville, FL, Scruggs was an intriguing recruit for the Gamecocks. His big frame at 6’2” and 225 pounds, combined with his speed, could have provided a new dimension to the Gamecock offense. In 2010, Scruggs would register the only three receptions of his career for 53 yards. In 2011, Scruggs was often seen on the field but would not register a single reception.
Baker, a redshirt junior, has been haunted by injuries throughout his entire career. Chances of playing time have virtually disappeared as Marcus Lattimore is scheduled to return to the lead back role and backup running back Kenny Miles will officially return to the Gamecocks in 2012, as will Shon Carson. In Lattimore’s absence, freshman running back Brandon Wilds filled in nicely rushing for 486 yards. With the addition of the highly touted Mike Davis, the running back position for the Gamecocks has officially turned into a logjam. For his career, Baker rushed 53 times for 216 yards.
