Minor League All-Star Homerun Derby To Be Held On The USS Yorktown

The 53rd annual South Atlantic League All-Star game will have an interesting twist this year on its location. The first round of the annual home run derby will be held on the flight deck of the USS Yorktown in Charleston, South Carolina. The USS Yorktown is a retired Navy aircraft carrier currently stationed at Patriots Point and the home of one Charleston’s most prominent tourist attractions. The Yorktown overlooks the beautiful Charleston Harbor with the Cooper River Bridge serving as its backdrop. It will serve as truly one of the most imaginative locations for a homerun derby.

The SAL All Star game will take place just down the road at Joe Riley Park home of the Charleston Riverdogs (Single-A affiliates of the New York Yankees), along with the final round of the homerun derby. The first round begins on Monday June 18th at 11:00 am, which is kind of a bummer for those that actually have jobs and won’t be able to watch first-hand. The final round will be held the next day at 5:15pm at Joe Riley Park and will be immediately followed by the All-Star game at 7:00. Local boy and Yankees prospect, Tyler Austin, who leads the SAL with 11 homeruns is expected to participate.

Another fun incentive that might bring you to the park is the chance to meet owner and comedian Bill Murray. Murray can frequently be spotted at the Riverdogs games and always provides some form of comical relief/entertainment throughout the game. So if you’re within driving distance, this should be an awesome sporting event to take in!
